Current project

Alcohol Harm Prevention

We have been a leading force in youth substance intervention since 2016, when we first launched the Alcohol Prevention Project. Established in partnership with the Swedish international organization IOGT-NTO Movement, the initiative initially focused its grass-roots efforts in the Soroti district of Eastern Uganda to combat high rates of local and factory-brewed alcohol consumption among youth aged 10 to 20. Over its foundational years, the project successfully pioneered peer-education modules and established community prevention leadership action teams. These youth-led teams successfully advocated for localized alcohol ordinances and by-laws regulating when and where alcohol could be sold.

Building upon this decade of proven community impact, UGGA expanded the initiative into an ambitious subsequent phase spanning 2025 to 2028. This current expansion scales the project’s peer-to-peer life skills training, grass-roots advocacy and school safety networks into new, high-risk operational areas including Kabale, Rukiga, Kumi, and Pallisa. These youth-led campaigns directly target primary and secondary schools to keep children in classrooms and out of local brew settings. By raising community awareness, challenging peer pressure, and fostering alcohol-free environments, the project empowers young Ugandans aged 10 to 20 to secure their health and build a safer, more productive future free from the negative impacts of substance abuse.
